HUGELKULTURE
Hugelkultur is making raised garden beds under which is filled with twigs, branches and rotting wood. They are raised garden beds with organic material, air pockets and nutrients for the roots of what you plant. This system has been used in Europe for hundreds of years. A point worth noting is that in the tropics the system rotting wood breaks down quickly due to the year round decomposition, high moisture and much higher temperatures. So in Thailand be prepared to rebuild your Hugel bed every 2 years.
Benefits include:
you can grow a typical garden without irrigation or fertilization
it has been demonstrated to work in deserts as well as backyards
it uses up rotting wood, twigs, branches and even whole trees that would otherwise go to the dump or be burned
it can be flush with the ground, although raised garden beds are typically better
it sequesters carbon and is good for the environment

Rain Garden downspout
RAIN GARDENS A rain garden is a shallow depression that is planted with deep-rooted native plants and grasses. The garden should be positioned near a runoff source like a downspout, driveway or grey water pipe to capture water runoff and stop the water from leaving the property.
