DROUGHT PROOFING and FLOOD Planning COURSE – 3 DAYS:        Water as a resource in the landscape – Learn how to see water as a valuable asset to small and large landscapes by observing the design and implementation of water harvesting and storage systems at (PIT) Issan Permaculture Farm including ponds, swales, terraces, paddy aquaculture, rainwater harvested systems (including potable use) and rotational grazing systems. Water productivity and efficiency measurement – how much food for how much water. Practice mapping and marking contour and develop an eye for how the parts fit together in a complete picture. Observe excavations, a swale system and a riparian buffer zone on site. Flood proofing – channeling, contour, ponds, pond level stratification, emergency planing.  This course introduces the ecological design approach known as permaculture and shows how it can be used to create water-wise landscapes in various climates. Permaculture combines concepts and principles derived from nature with research from ecology and sustainability fields to help design healthy landscapes, homes, and communities that reduce resource use, are low-maintenance, and are self-renewing. You will learn about specific techniques that work in a wet/dry climate like Asia, and gain a general understanding of permaculture design and application. We take technical, scientific information and making it easy to understand to everyone, regardless of science background. We will see seven strategies for achieving drought proofing. We see the many benefits, besides water conservation, that come with implementing each water-wise strategy. By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge necessary to begin implementing water conservation techniques in your farm or garden. More on Drought Proofing

Aid relief aid 1

NGO – Permaculture Disaster Aid and Relief Course- 4 DAYS
Human tragedy happens every day and can happen on large scale at anytime. Acts like Earthquake, Tsunami, Hurricanes, flooding and drought as well as heat waves and climate change. These major life threatening situations most always involve drinking water and sanitation. Water and sewage systems break down in crisis resulting in water borne diseases causing chaos. Risks become high when these resources are low or non-existent. NGO rescue organizations are often overwhelmed and not able to reach some areas for weeks. Permaculture Disaster Aid and Relief has solutions, using local resources to solve problems, that others don’t or didn’t have knowledge of to handle these situations especially in the areas of human waste and unfiltered water.
Steps: Usually in crisis everything like airports are closed only military and rescue planes have access and roads are often unpredictable. So how to establish a base camp to operate from (though conditions are often primitive and harsh, at first) you must start here. To get access to other disaster organizations, military personnel, and government officials, and to be more effective, this is a first step, in connecting with major hospitals, UNICEF, Army, ACTED and other major organizations. All of these need the specialized skills of Permaculture designers.
Often the first goal was to save lives by getting low tech, sustainable solutions going rapidly, while establishing relationships with locals and NGOs that could be developed in the future for longer term design projects.
How to filter water via low tech methods, using locally available materials such as sand and plastic bottles. Sanitation – compost toilets for large numbers of people. Educating people on tropical plants and filtering their own water quickly. Water filtration has traditionally been the main potential to save lives. So in crisis, the death rate from dysentery, and water borne diseases, especially for children is high. So building compost toilets, sourcing and obtaining organic material, growing fast growing plants like vetiver grass and bamboo, building safe latrines for camps, building easy showers, these skill sets are invaluable.
  • Project evaluation and assessment
  • Permaculture integrating local production and food systems
  • Community inclusiveness and ownership, building local ownership and leadership
  • Appropriate technology
  • Shelter, clean water, food, hygiene, community black water management

I addition to changing climate are changing food and social conditions, these factors are causing instability in areas around the world previously stable.  Local staple foods, dependent on stable reliable climate can result in destabilized communities. We will learn methods to build resiliency, diversity and stabilize for food security  and resilient infrastructure, supply basic needs of shelter, clean water, food.  Good permaculture with social, economic and appropriate technology with Permaculture relationship to local resource,  good stewardship we create resilient and stable community food, water and shelter systems.

Real case studies, group dynamics, ethnology-cultural role play, disaster planing, critical leadership, special needs of children, disaster preparedness.

STUDENTS COMMENTS:  PDC Courses

This is awesome! Last year I had the opportunity to learn from both Howard and the other instructors they are truly inspiring teachers, their depth of knowledge and willingness to explain and instruct made complex ideas understandable for me..participate in the design and establishment of water catchment on your property… see all of the considerations put into a permaculture plan of your property..and be able to watch as the merits of different ideas are discussed and contrasted, and then get outside, get dirty, and do it! – J. Huorn – permies.com

I like the way Howard answered my questions and took time to ensure I understood the material. – J. Wonchan
